Kinja'd!!!

We have a chest freezer in the basement because our tiny side-by-side upstairs just isn’t big enough. This week, a funny smell appeared near the basement stairs and upon further investigation we discovered said freezer was off. Apparently there’s a short in the outlet or something.

So this morning, I had the pleasure of removing spoiled poultry, fish, beef, pork, and venison from the freezer and running it straight out to the trash. Even though we turned on the freezer and let it re-freeze, it’s easily one of the worst smells I’ve ever encountered. And now it’s everywhere because I just wasn’t prepared for how terrible it would be and didn’t bother to open the basement windows before hand.

I have work to do outside, but I have to venture back down there for tools and supplies first...

Yes. When I was in high school our neighbors went out of town for a number of days and we checked on their pets for them. Someone left their huge upright freezer door open and the motor eventually burned out. It was full of packages of meat and somehow many of them exploded as they thawed. There was nasty, stinking meat all over.

Nasty shit. One of our renters left some fish in the fridge, horrible.

Botulism?

I still remember helping my grandfather bury the collective contents of our freezers after an extended power outage. That was 30 years ago and I can still recall the smell.

Thankfully it didn’t get that far. No scraping rotting flesh off of the inside of the freezer for me.

No idea. I just know there was meat splatter for a decent radius from the fridge opening.

Get a ton of activated charcoal and some fans

Every fan in the house is running right now and all of the windows are open. Unfortunately, the best odor combatant I have is a handful of candles and some Febreeze.

Scoop up some antibacterial Lysol with Alkyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride. It will kill the smell but it is a HARSH chemical when inhaled. So spray it and then leave the room until it dissipates.

Once you finish emptying out the freezer, leave it open. Throw some white vinegar in it and slosh it around all over the floor and walls of the freezer, then sop it all up. Let the remaining vinegar air dry. That’ll kill the bad smell.

You can also try pouring baking soda all over the bottom of the freezer and then pouring white vinegar on top of it. It will cause a chemical reaction (fizzy bubbles). You can then wipe that up and let the residue air dry. Voila! No more smell.

That sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the tip.
